This tote bag bears a scan of the syringes section from the 1897 Sears Roebuck mail-order catalog. The original printing pre-dates national drug prohibition in the U.S. and comes from a time when drugs were widely available over the counter, and indeed through the mail. I chose this image to challenge the hegemony and perceived inevitability of the drug war. Things have not always been this way, and they do not have to be any longer. This item will be available until I receive a cease & desist letter from Sears, which I will frame on my wall and cherish forever.

This is a poster-sized version of my very first Instagram infographic, “The First Drug Law”. It briefly outlines the social and political forces that birthed the first anti-drug regulation on the mainland U.S., which was firmly couched in anti-Chinese fearmongering and state-sponsored violence. Perfect for drop-in centers, living rooms, or on the wall of your cool history teacher’s classroom. The original infographic can be found here or on my Instagram @dyke_imitates_art

This shirt features my interpretation of the Staff of Asclepius, a serpent-entwined rod wielded by the Greek god of healing and medicine. It also draws inspiration and its product name from the Caduceus, a staff carried by Hermes that has been widely adopted as a symbol of medicine. The staff is represented by an antique syringe to acknowledge the long histories of harm reduction and the war on drugs. The serpent traditionally symbolizes rebirth. In this iteration, the snake is drawn to resemble an X-ray because I thought it would look punk-er that way.
